Is Shroud of the Avatar Set in “New Britannia”?

As noted in the news round-up that was posted recently, Polygon has an amazing, and lengthy, write-up about Shroud of the Avatar. The backdrop to the article, however, is almost as interesting as the article itself:

This is an early concept version of the map for Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues, and can actually be seen (albeit briefly) in the map evolution video here. Polygon were fortunate enough to be able to take a picture of the drawing, and some of the notes scribbed on it are interesting. A town in the north-eastern part of the continent is evidently associated with the wind, and another town in the north-western areas is marked “thermal”, suggesting association with heat or fire. A third classic alchemal element can be found in the label (“hydro”) written over where the central “hub” city is located on the map. All we’re missing is something labeled…I don’t know…”earthen” or suchlike.

In the legends on the left- and right-hand sides of the map, we can see that mountains and volcanoes are, or can be expected to be, impassible obstacles, whereas forests simply slow character movement and expose the player to the possibility of ambushes. Ferries and, potentially, air ferries may also feature in the game. And I can’t be the only one curious about what “control points” are and how they factor into the plot of the game.

But the really interesting detail, I think, is in the upper left- and right-hand corners of the map, where it says (respectively) “New Britannia West” and “New Britannia East”. This suggests that, at least during the initial planning phases for the game’s setting, the world in which Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues will be set was called “New Britannia”.

Is it still?
